Power 101: Benefits of Bi-Directional Charging for EVs
One side effect of the growing number of EVs is that we have distributed millions of large mobile batteries throughout the world. By adding bi-directional chargers, users will be able to use those batteries for more than just powering their EVs. Vehicle-to-grid transfer feeds power back into the grid. This can be used to balance supply and demand, which is especially helpful for improving the reliability of renewable sources such as wind and solar that have inconsistent production based on environmental conditions.
The EV can recharge when excess power is being produced and supply power to the grid during peak demand, with the user receiving compensation accordingly. Vehicle-to-equipment transfer allows the vehicle to act as a remote microgrid for remote work sites or other locations lacking AC infrastructure. The vehicle's AC output can power a range of equipment and tools that would otherwise be dependent on a gas generator. Vehicle-to-vehicle transfer provides a convenient and efficient way to charge UVs that become stranded between charging stations, or that are used in remote locations without access to a charging station, particularly in remote or rural areas where infrastructure is limited.
For reliable bi-directional charging, Bel's BCV200-350-8 and BCV200-700-8 are 20 kilowatt combo units that include a 15 kilowatt bi-directional charger for 350 or 700 volt batteries. They operate from a universal AC input and can efficiently output 240 volt AC split phase in export mode.
